You wash it, it comes out of the machine smelling of nothing, and twenty minutes into a run it smells like it was never washed at all. Compression gear does this and cotton does not, and the reason sits in the fibre rather than in your machine or your detergent.

Why compression gear holds smell when nothing else does
A cotton shirt worn through the same session comes out of the same wash smelling of nothing. A compression top does not, and that difference is built into the fabric rather than into how hard you worked.
Compression clothing is a dense knit of polyester or nylon with a high proportion of elastane, worn under tension directly against skin.
Every one of those properties works against you here. Tight contact means maximum transfer of sweat and oil. High elastane means very little tolerance for the heat that would otherwise help. A dense knit means water and detergent struggle to get all the way through.
So your washing is not failing. This one category of garment is genuinely harder to clean than anything else in the basket.
Which means it needs a routine of its own rather than being thrown in with the towels.
The fibre is the whole explanation
Polyester and nylon are hydrophobic, meaning they shed water, which is why compression gear dries fast and wicks well.
They are also oleophilic, meaning they attract and hold oil. Both properties come from the same chemistry and you cannot have one without the other.
Sweat itself is mostly water and salt and washes out easily. The problem is sebum, the oil skin produces continuously, which comes out alongside it.
Oil binds to synthetic fibre and water alone does nothing to it. A cycle of water and mechanical action carries the salt away and leaves the oil sitting exactly where it was.
Cotton behaves differently because it absorbs water into the fibre itself, which takes the oil along with it. Synthetic keeps the oil on the surface where nothing dissolves it.
The smell is what happens to that oil afterwards. Skin bacteria break it down into short chain fatty acids and similar compounds, and those are what you can smell.
Take the oil out and there is nothing left to break down. That is the target of everything below.
Why it comes back on the body and not in the drawer
The classic experience is a garment that seems fine folded and is unbearable ten minutes into being worn.
That is because the residue left in the fibre is largely odourless while it is dry and cool.
Warmth and fresh moisture reactivate it. Body heat softens the oil, new sweat rewets it, and the breakdown products lift off the fabric into the air around you.
The honest test is to warm it. Hold it closed in your hand for a minute, or breathe through it, and any residue left in there will announce itself.
This is also why the problem creeps up on people. Each wash leaves a little behind, nothing appears to change in the drawer, and then one day the garment is unwearable.
The bag is where most of the damage is done
The single most useful habit costs nothing at all. Do not leave it balled up in a bag.
A damp compressed garment inside a closed bag is warm, wet and airless for hours, which gives the breakdown a long head start.
If it cannot go straight in the wash, hang it somewhere with moving air until it can. Draped over a rail beats folded on a chair, and either beats the bag.
A kit bag left in a car adds heat to the equation and makes the whole thing substantially worse.
Rinsing compression gear in cold water in a sink on the way in, then hanging it, buys you a day or two for almost no effort.
The routine that actually works
Turn it inside out. The surface carrying the oil is the one that sat against skin, and that is the surface water has to reach.
Soak it first in cold or cool water for twenty to thirty minutes. A cold soak loosens what is bound to the fibre without setting anything, and this step does more than people expect.
Wash cool, on a normal cycle rather than a delicate one. This fabric needs mechanical action and it is tough enough to take it.
Use an enzyme detergent, ideally one containing lipase, since lipase is the enzyme that breaks down fat and oil. A small dose, measured rather than poured.
No fabric softener at any point. Softener coats the fibre with a waxy film that seals the remaining oil underneath and stops water reaching the fabric at all, which is the worst single thing you can do to this category.
Add an extra rinse. A dense knit rinses badly, and the whole exercise fails if detergent stays behind in the fabric.
Wash it apart from towels and cotton, both because lint clogs the knit and because a packed mixed load reduces how much water reaches each garment.
Heat is what makes it permanent
Hot water looks like the obvious answer and it is the opposite of one.
Elastane starts to degrade well below boiling. Hot washes and dryer heat break the polymer down, the fibre stops recovering its shape, and the compression is gone.
A garment that has lost its compression has lost its purpose. Bagging at the knee, a waistband that no longer sits, sleeves that slide down your arm.
Heat does something worse to the smell as well. Oil still sitting in the fabric when heat is applied bonds harder to the fibre, and a garment dried hot on a bad day is often affected permanently.
Air drying takes an hour or two for this fabric, which is barely an inconvenience, and it roughly doubles the working life of the garment.
Radiators and hot vents count as dryer heat. So does a sunny windowsill in summer, which adds ultraviolet damage to the elastane on top of the warmth.
Why more detergent makes it worse
The instinct with a garment that still smells is to use more detergent next time, and it reliably backfires.
Detergent has to be rinsed out to do its job, and a dense high elastane knit is already the hardest thing in the drum to rinse.
Excess detergent stays in the fabric as a film. That film holds oil against the fibre and gives the next round of residue something to stick to.
The correct move is less detergent and more rinsing, which feels backwards and is consistently right.
Overloading the machine has the same effect for the same reason. A packed drum cannot rinse, so half a drum is the target for a load of compression gear.
Stripping a garment that is past the routine
When a piece has years of buildup in it, a normal wash no longer reaches the problem and a reset is needed.
Wash it with detergent as usual first, so that what you are stripping is an otherwise clean garment.
Then soak it for an hour in cool water with a cup of white vinegar, which cuts through mineral deposit and detergent film.
Rinse thoroughly, then run it through a plain cycle with no detergent at all and an extra rinse.
Do not mix vinegar with any chlorine product in the same step, and keep chlorine bleach away from elastane entirely, since it destroys the fibre.
Once or twice a year is plenty. Stripping is a repair rather than part of the routine, and doing it constantly wears the fabric out.
When the elastic is genuinely done
Compression gear has a working life measured in wearings rather than in years, and no laundry routine extends it forever.
The test is recovery. Stretch a section and let go, and it should snap back flat with no slack left in it.
Slack that stays, a waistband that rolls, a leg that slides down, or fabric gone thin and slightly transparent at the seat and the knee all mean the elastane has finished.
Washing it correctly from the start is what pushes that point further out, and heat is what drags it closer.
Rotating between two or three pieces rather than wearing one favourite constantly does more for lifespan than any other single habit, because elastane recovers between wearings and cannot recover if it never gets the chance.
The Westminster part
Two things about living here make this a bigger issue than it would be elsewhere, and the first is simply how much of it gets worn. Outdoor activity runs year round in this part of Colorado, and several pieces in constant rotation put far more sweat through synthetic fabric than an occasional gym habit ever does.
The dry air is the second, and it works against you in a way people do not expect. Sweat evaporates quickly here, so a top often feels dry within minutes of stopping. Feeling dry is not the same as being clean, and the salt and the oil are still in the knit exactly as they would be anywhere else.
That combination produces the classic mistake. A piece that feels dry gets folded and put back in the bag or the drawer instead of going in the wash, gets pulled out again a few days later, and collects two or three sessions of oil before it ever meets water.
The counterweight is that air drying is genuinely fast in this climate, which removes the main excuse for reaching for a dryer. Compression gear hung indoors is dry in an hour or two, so keeping it away from heat costs you almost nothing and is the largest single thing you can do for how long it lasts.
Where a technical load gets enough water
All of this comes down to getting water and detergent right through a dense knit and then getting every trace of it back out.
