Oven gloves and pot holders are the only textiles in a house whose failure can burn you, and they are almost never washed or replaced on any schedule. Most households use the same pair until it is visibly ruined, by which point it stopped protecting them some time ago.

How oven gloves actually protect you
An oven glove works by putting insulation between your hand and the heat, and the insulation is mostly trapped air rather than the fabric itself.
A quilted cotton mitt has layers of batting with air held between the fibres. Air conducts heat poorly, so the heat takes time to cross, and that delay is your protection.
Two things destroy that delay, and both are invisible.
Compression. Batting that has been crushed flat, by washing, by wringing, or by years of being squashed in a drawer, holds far less air and transfers heat much faster.
Moisture. Water conducts heat dramatically better than air does, so a damp oven glove is close to no protection at all. Picking up a hot tray with a damp mitt produces a steam burn, and it happens instantly rather than gradually.
Silicone gloves work differently, by using a material with low conductivity rather than trapped air, which is why they are unaffected by washing but offer less dexterity.
Washing them properly
Check the label first, because the construction varies enormously and some have a foil or plastic layer that will not survive heat.
Wash on warm rather than hot. Warm is enough for cooking grease and it is kinder to the batting.
Treat the greasy areas first, since that is what is actually on them. Work dish soap into the palm and thumb, leave it fifteen minutes, and then wash. Dish soap outperforms laundry detergent on concentrated cooking fat by a wide margin.
Use a small dose of enzyme detergent, which handles the food protein and starch alongside the fat.
Wash them with kitchen textiles rather than with clothing, since the grease transfers.
Add an extra rinse. Detergent residue in batting stiffens it, which compresses the air spaces.
Drying, which decides whether they still work
This is the part that matters most and the part people rush.
Dry them completely, and then give them longer. Quilted batting holds moisture in the core long after the outside feels dry, and a mitt that feels ready can still be damp inside where you cannot tell.
A low tumble dry is fine and it helps, because the tumbling redistributes the batting and restores some loft rather than letting it dry compressed. Add a couple of dryer balls.
Never a hot dryer, which can damage any silicone grip or foil layer.
If you air dry them, hang them so air reaches both faces and expect a full day.
The test is weight and feel. A dry mitt feels light and springy. If it feels dense or cool against your cheek, it is still damp.
The fire safety point
This one is worth taking seriously.
Cooking oil in fabric can self-heat, and oil-saturated textiles in a hot dryer have started fires. Oven gloves are among the most oil-saturated things in a kitchen.
Never tumble dry a heavily greasy mitt before it has been properly washed.
Never leave a pile of greasy kitchen cloths bunched together while damp.
And never use a mitt with a frayed or worn edge near a flame, since loose cotton threads catch light readily.
When to replace them
Oven gloves have a service life and it is shorter than people assume.
Replace them when the batting feels thin or compressed compared with a new one, which is the main failure and the hardest to notice.
Replace them if you can feel heat coming through faster than you used to. That sensation is the honest test and it is worth acting on rather than tolerating.
Replace them at any hole, thin patch, or burn mark, since heat goes straight through.
Replace them when the silicone grip has cracked or peeled.
Two pairs in rotation is genuinely worth it, so one is always dry and you are never tempted to use a damp one.
Pot holders and tea towels
Pot holders follow exactly the same rules and are usually thinner, so they compress faster.
The habit worth breaking is using a folded tea towel as a pot holder. A tea towel has no batting, it is frequently damp from drying dishes, and both of those make it close to useless as insulation. It is the most common cause of minor kitchen burns.
Keep tea towels and heat protection as separate items with separate jobs.
Washing frequency
Weekly for anything in regular use, which is far more often than most households manage.
Grease accumulates invisibly and oxidises as it sits, which is why old mitts have a permanent yellowish cast across the palm and a faint rancid smell when warmed.
Washing them often is also the practical way to notice that the batting has gone, since you handle them properly rather than grabbing them.

A damp mitt is a burn waiting to happen, and it is also how they develop the musty smell that never quite washes out. Use a dryer on low for these specifically, or a fan, rather than leaving them on a rail.
Hard water is a smaller third factor. Mineral deposits in batting add to the compression problem and make a mitt feel stiff, so half a cup of washing soda in the wash is worth adding and it helps cut the grease at the same time.

Greasy kitchen textiles need warm water, real water volume to carry the fat away rather than redistribute it, and a drum they are not sharing with clothing.
