
The lint screen is the only part of a dryer most people ever touch, and cleaning it is where most people stop. Behind it is a housing, a duct, and an exterior vent, and all three collect lint that the screen never caught.
That accumulation does three things: it makes every load take longer, it wears the machine out faster, and it is the leading cause of dryer fires. The first two cost money slowly. The third is the reason this is worth an afternoon.
Why lint gets past the screen
A lint screen catches most of what comes off fabric, not all of it. The fine material passes through and settles wherever the airflow slows down.
That means the housing the screen sits in, the flexible duct behind the machine, every bend in that duct, and the flap at the exterior wall.
Two things make it worse. A long duct run with several turns holds far more than a short straight one, and flexible foil or plastic ducting has ridges that catch lint in a way smooth rigid metal does not.
Fabric softener and dryer sheets add to it, because the film they leave coats the screen and the duct walls and gives lint something to stick to.
The signs your duct is restricted
You will notice these before anything dramatic happens.
Loads take two cycles. The most common early sign. A dryer that used to finish in forty-five minutes and now needs ninety is not wearing out, it is suffocating.
The outside of the dryer is hot to the touch. Heat that should be leaving through the vent is staying in the cabinet.
The laundry room gets warm and humid while the dryer runs. That moisture should be going outside.
Clothes come out very hot rather than warm.
A faint burning smell. Stop using it and check the duct before running it again.
The exterior flap does not open when the dryer is running, or barely moves. Go outside and look while someone runs a cycle. This is the fastest diagnostic there is.
Cleaning it, which is a Saturday job once a year
Unplug the dryer. If it is gas, turn off the gas supply valve as well.
Pull it away from the wall and disconnect the duct from the back of the machine.
Vacuum the duct from both ends with a hose attachment. A dryer vent brush kit, which is a long flexible brush, is inexpensive and reaches what a vacuum cannot.
Vacuum the port on the back of the dryer and the lint screen housing inside. A narrow attachment or a dedicated lint brush gets down into it, and the amount that comes out of the housing surprises most people.
Go outside and clear the exterior vent. Open the flap, pull out what is behind it, and check for a bird nest, which is common and completely blocks airflow.
Reconnect with foil tape rather than screws. Screws that project into the duct catch lint and build a blockage at exactly that point. Metal foil tape is the correct fastener.
Replace flexible plastic or foil duct with rigid or semi-rigid metal if that is what you have. Plastic ducting is a fire risk and is no longer allowed in new installations in most places.
Once a year for a normal household. Twice a year if you do a lot of laundry, if the duct run is long, or if you have pets.
The hygiene side, which people do not consider
A restricted duct is not only a fire and efficiency problem.
The moisture that should be venting outside stays in the laundry room instead. A single load puts a substantial amount of water into the air, and in a basement laundry room in an Omaha winter, with the windows shut, that moisture goes into the walls and onto the coldest surfaces in the room.
That is how a laundry area develops a musty smell, and how mildew starts on drywall and on stored items nearby.
It also means clothes take longer to dry, and fabric that stays warm and damp longer is fabric that can start to smell before the cycle finishes.
The lint screen itself
Clean it every single load. Not most loads.
Then test it for film once in a while. Take the screen to a sink and run water over it. If the water pools on the mesh rather than passing straight through, there is a coating on it, which comes from fabric softener and dryer sheets. Scrub it with a soft brush and warm soapy water, rinse, and dry it completely before putting it back.
A screen with a film on it restricts airflow even when it looks perfectly clean, which is why the test is worth doing.
Things that do not belong in any dryer
Worth listing, because these are the loads that actually cause fires.
Anything with oil, grease, gasoline, or solvent on it. Shop rags, mechanic clothes, kitchen towels soaked in cooking oil. Oil-soaked fabric can self-heat and ignite in a warm dryer even after washing, and this is a documented cause of fires rather than a theoretical one. Line dry those.
Foam, rubber-backed rugs, and anything with a plastic coating. The backing degrades and can ignite.
Anything that has been in a chemical spill.
What a commercial setup does differently
The difference is not the machines so much as the maintenance and the venting.
Our machines and the store are cleaned daily. Commercial dryer venting is designed for the load it carries, inspected, and cleared on a schedule rather than when someone notices a problem. That is the part a household almost never replicates.
The practical result at our self-service laundry on Ames Avenue is that dryers run at full airflow, so a load finishes in one cycle rather than two. The washers also extract at far higher speed than a household machine, which means less water is left in the fabric before drying even starts. Most of what makes home drying slow is water that should have been spun out.
