
Plenty of households around Temple are not on city water. Once you are outside the service area you are on a private well, and a well behaves nothing like a municipal supply when it comes to laundry.
People move out to acreage, keep doing laundry the same way they always did, and within a few months the whites have gone dingy, the towels feel like sandpaper, and something in the linen closet smells faintly of earth. None of that is the detergent’s fault.
Two things are different about well water
The first is hardness. Groundwater in Central Texas moves through limestone, and it picks up calcium and magnesium on the way. Most wells in this part of the state are hard, and many are very hard.
The second is that there is no treatment. City water arrives filtered and disinfected. Well water arrives as whatever is in the ground, which can include iron, manganese, sulfur, sediment, and bacteria, in whatever combination your particular well produces.
Your neighbor’s well half a mile away can be meaningfully different from yours. This is why generic advice fails here and why the first step is finding out what you actually have.
What hardness does to a wash
Calcium and magnesium react with detergent. Instead of cleaning, part of your detergent binds to the minerals and forms an insoluble curd, which then deposits back onto the fabric.
That deposit is what you are feeling when towels go stiff and scratchy. It is also why whites turn gray rather than staying white, and why colors look chalky. The fabric is coated.
It builds up cycle after cycle. Most people respond by adding more detergent, which adds more curd, which makes it worse. That is the loop almost every hard water household ends up in.
It is hard on the machine too. Scale forms on the heating element and inside the hoses and valves the same way it does in a kettle.
Iron is the one that stains
Iron is common in Texas groundwater and it is the cause of the orange or yellow-brown marks that appear on white laundry with no obvious source.
Dissolved iron is invisible in the water. It oxidizes when it hits air and detergent, and it deposits as rust on the fabric. So the water looks clear, and the stains show up anyway.
Never use chlorine bleach if your water has iron. This is the single most important thing to know here, and it is the opposite of what people reach for on a stained white item. Chlorine oxidizes the iron and sets the stain permanently, and it will yellow the whole load. Use oxygen bleach instead.
For existing iron stains, a rust remover made for fabric works. Citric acid or a long soak in water with lemon juice will handle light marks. Never put an iron-stained item in the dryer before the mark is gone.
The musty smell, which is a well problem
City water carries residual chlorine, which keeps bacteria down in the pipes and, incidentally, in your washer. Well water does not.
That means a well-fed washing machine is a friendlier environment for the bacteria and mildew that cause odor, particularly in a front loader where the door gasket stays damp.
Sulfur bacteria are a separate issue and produce the rotten egg smell some wells have. That comes out of the well, not the machine, and it needs to be handled at the water rather than in the laundry.
Wipe the gasket dry after use, leave the door open between loads, and run an empty hot cycle with white vinegar monthly. On well water that maintenance is not optional the way it nearly is on city water.
How to actually wash on a well
Test your water first. Bell County wells vary and you cannot fix what you have not measured. A home test kit will tell you hardness and iron, which is most of what matters for laundry. The county extension office can point you at proper testing for the rest.
Add a water softener or a detergent booster. A whole-house softener solves hardness at the source and it is the real answer if you are staying put. Short of that, borax or washing soda added to each load binds the minerals so your detergent can do its job.
Use a liquid detergent rather than powder. Powders react more readily with hard water minerals. Liquids handle it better.
Do not add more detergent to compensate. Add a booster instead. More detergent in hard water means more residue, not more cleaning.
Wash warm rather than cold. Minerals and detergent both behave better with some heat, and cold water in hard conditions is where the worst buildup happens.
Add a rinse aid. Half a cup of white vinegar in the rinse dissolves mineral deposits and softens fabric without the coating that fabric softener leaves.
Install a sediment filter if your well produces any grit. Sand and silt in the water is abrasive, it wears fabric, and it accumulates in the machine.
Resetting laundry that is already coated
If towels and sheets are stiff and gray from months of hard water, a normal wash will not recover them because the buildup is what is in the way.
Run them hot with one cup of white vinegar and no detergent. Then run them again hot with half a cup of washing soda and no detergent. Then dry completely.
For heavy mineral buildup, soak first in hot water with washing soda and borax for several hours before that sequence.
The catch is that this takes volume. Stripping means carrying minerals away in water, and a household machine holds a fixed and fairly small amount, so the residue you loosen largely redeposits. That is why people strip at home, see the water turn brown, and end up with towels that are only somewhat improved.

The short version
Well water is hard and untreated, and both of those change your laundry. Hardness makes detergent form a curd that coats fabric, so add borax or washing soda as a booster rather than adding more detergent. Iron causes orange stains, and chlorine bleach sets them permanently, so use oxygen bleach on a well. With no residual chlorine in the water, your washer needs monthly vinegar cleaning and a dry gasket. Test your water before you change anything, because two wells a mile apart are not the same.
