Each wash carries off a small proportion of what is on the fabric. Nothing changes noticeably for months, because there is still plenty left to do the work.

Then the remaining amount drops below whatever level was holding the smell back, and the garment starts behaving like the untreated synthetic it always was underneath.

Because that is a threshold being crossed rather than a slow slide, it feels from the outside as though the shirt broke overnight.

Published durability figures for these finishes are usually quoted in tens of washes rather than hundreds, and results in ordinary use are often lower than the figures.

So a garment worn twice a week and washed each time is quite likely to be past it inside a year, at which point laundry odors arrive looking like a mystery.

Fabric softener finishes it in a single wash

Softener works by depositing a thin waxy layer across the fibre surface. That is the mechanism, not a side effect of it.

That coating sits over the top of any finish, so whatever the treatment was doing it can no longer reach the surface where it was doing it.

The same coating is what stops treated activewear wicking, which is the better known version of exactly the same problem.

Softener also reacts directly with some finishes rather than merely covering them, which shortens things further.

Dryer sheets do the identical thing by a different route, transferring the coating with heat instead of with water.

One wash with softener can undo a finish that had two years left in it, and this is the most common way people destroy them without ever realising they did it. The first sign is laundry odors in a garment that never had any.

Heat is the other thing that shortens it

High wash temperatures accelerate the loss, because the bonds holding a finish to the fibre are weakened by heat and hot moving water strips more away per cycle.

Dryer heat is worse than wash heat, and it also damages the synthetic fibre underneath, flattening the surface texture the garment relied on.

Chlorine bleach reacts with silver finishes directly and ends them on the spot.

Strongly alkaline detergent at a heavy dose shortens them as well, which is one more argument for a modest dose on anything technical.

Repeated hot drying is how most treated garments end up stretched, shiny and no longer resistant, all at the same time.

Low heat or no heat costs you nothing here, since synthetics dry quickly whatever you do.

The care label is asking for something specific

Cold or warm wash, mild detergent, no softener, no bleach, low heat or line dry. That is the standard set and it appears on almost every treated garment sold.

It is written in the same tone as ordinary care advice, so people read it as fussiness rather than as the condition attached to the feature they paid extra for.

The instruction that matters most is the softener one, and it is nearly always buried in the middle of the list where nothing stands out.

Turning garments inside out helps, because it puts the abrasion on the outer face rather than on the side that meets skin.

Washing treated items together, away from cotton and well away from towels, cuts the mechanical wear considerably.

None of this preserves a finish forever. It is the difference between two years and six months, which is worth having and is not immortality.

How much it was doing in the first place

This is worth asking, because the honest answer for a lot of garments is not very much.

Independent testing of consumer clothing has generally found smaller differences between treated and untreated fabric than the marketing implies, and the gap narrows further after a garment has been through a few washes.

Fibre and construction do a lot of the work people credit to the treatment. Merino wool resists laundry odors with no finish applied at all, and a loose knit that dries fast outperforms a dense one that does not.

Part of the perceived benefit is simply that treated garments tend to be newer, and new synthetic fabric has not yet built up the oil layer that causes the trouble.

So the finish is one contributor among several, and every one of the others is still available to you once it has gone.

That reframes the whole subject usefully. Losing the finish is not the same as losing the garment.

What to do once it has gone

Wash the garment sooner after wearing rather than later. Oil that has sat in synthetic fibre for two days is harder to shift than oil washed out the same evening.

Never leave it in a bag or a heap, which is where a mild problem sets into a permanent one.

Use a full length cool cycle with a modest dose and an extra rinse, since oil is the target and leftover detergent makes the situation worse rather than better.

A pre soak in warm water with an enzyme detergent, for an hour, handles a garment that has begun holding laundry odors between washes.

For anything that smells the moment it warms up on the body, an occasional soak in a dilute solution of white vinegar before the wash helps, because it addresses the residue the oil clings to.

And think about the fibre next time. A wool or wool blend layer gives you the same behaviour permanently, because it comes from the material rather than from a coating on top of it.
