Soaking is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that does the most for set-in laundry odors. The reason is contact time. Detergent chemistry needs minutes of quiet exposure to break down what is trapped inside a fibre, and a forty minute wash cycle spends most of its length doing something else entirely.

Why forty minutes is not enough time
A wash cycle looks like it lasts a good while. Very little of that length is detergent sitting in contact with fabric.
The drum fills, agitates, drains, refills to rinse, drains again, and spins. The chemistry gets the wash phase only, and inside that phase the water is moving the whole time.
Movement is good for loose soil sitting on the surface. It does very little for residue that has worked its way into the core of a cotton fibre and dried there.
That residue is what feeds laundry odors, and reaching it takes sustained exposure rather than force.
A soak gives detergent the one thing a cycle cannot: uninterrupted time against the fibre with nothing else happening.
It is also the cheapest step in laundry. It costs no product, no electricity, and no attention. It costs waiting.
What the first twenty minutes actually do
Twenty minutes is the shortest soak worth running, and it does a specific job.
The first few minutes are wetting. Water has to displace the air held in the fibre and get past whatever oily film sits on the surface.
Surfactants in the detergent handle that part. They lower the surface tension so water reaches places it would otherwise bead off.
By ten minutes the fabric is genuinely saturated and the detergent is in contact with the soil rather than sitting on top of it.
Between ten and twenty minutes those surfactants start lifting oily residue off the fibre and holding it suspended in the water.
A twenty minute soak on a towel with faint laundry odors is often enough on its own. On a work shirt that has been worn hard for a week, twenty minutes is only the opening.
An hour, and then overnight
The gap between twenty minutes and an hour is where enzymes come in.
Enzymes work slowly by design. They are catalysts that cut large soil molecules into smaller pieces the detergent can carry away, and each type only handles one sort of soil.
Protease goes after protein, which covers sweat, skin, and most body soil. Lipase goes after fat and oil. Amylase handles starch.
None of them act instantly. An hour in warm water is roughly the point where enzyme action stops being marginal and starts being obvious.
Overnight is for the hard cases. Anything stored for months, anything whose laundry odors have already survived two washes, anything where the fibre is saturated rather than surface soiled.
There is an upper limit. Past about eight hours you gain very little, and cotton left sitting in cool water for a full day starts to smell of the water it has been sitting in.
Which detergents actually work on laundry odors in a soak
This is where a soak either earns its evening or wastes it.
Enzyme detergents are built for exactly this. They do their work through chemistry rather than through force, which is what a soak supplies and what a gentle cycle does not.
Oxygen bleach, the powdered sort based on sodium percarbonate, is the other one that rewards a soak. It releases slowly in water and wants warmth and time, which is why it does almost nothing in a short cold cycle.
Washing soda helps with hard water and with greasy residue, and it works perfectly well sitting still.
Plain liquid detergent with no enzymes is mostly surfactant, and surfactant needs agitation to carry soil away once it has loosened it. Left to sit, it does part of the job and then stalls.
Fabric softener and scented boosters do nothing about laundry odors in a soak or out of one. They lay fragrance over residue rather than removing the residue.
Vinegar has a narrow use. It helps with mineral residue and mild musty smells, it is no substitute for detergent, and it should never share a soak with oxygen bleach.
Water temperature, which decides how fast anything happens
Warm water is the target for almost every soak. Warm, not hot.
Enzymes have a working range. They speed up as water warms and then break down completely once it gets too hot, so boiling water in a soak works against you.
Somewhere from body temperature to a little above is the useful band. Water that feels comfortably warm on the back of the hand is close enough.
Cold soaks do work. They simply take considerably longer, so if cold is what you have, extend the time rather than adding more product.
Hot water suits one situation only, which is heavy grease on sturdy cotton with no enzymes involved.
Water going cool during a long soak is normal and not a problem. Most of the useful work happens early, while it still holds its heat.
Where to soak, and how
Three options, and they suit different loads.
The machine on a pause is easiest for a full load. Start the cycle, let it fill and agitate for a minute so the detergent disperses, then pause it and walk away.
Dispersing first matters more than it sounds. Powder dropped onto dry fabric leaves one concentrated patch and a lot of untouched cloth.
A tub or a laundry sink suits a handful of items and lets you watch what is happening. Fill it, dissolve the detergent, then add the clothes.
A bucket handles one or two heavily soiled things such as work trousers or a gym kit. Keep everything fully submerged, since anything floating above the waterline dries out and contributes nothing.
Whichever you use, wash immediately afterwards. Soaked items left sitting wet in a container develop fresh laundry odors faster than dirty dry ones do, which undoes the entire point.
Do not reuse soak water for a second batch. Everything lifted out of the first load is still in it.
What benefits most, and what to keep out
Towels top the list. Terry loops hold detergent residue and body oil, and a soak reaches into them in a way a cycle does not.
Gym clothes are second and they produce the most stubborn laundry odors in most houses. Synthetic fibre holds oil on the surface rather than absorbing water, so a short wash rinses around the film instead of through it.
Work shirts come third, particularly collars and cuffs, where soil is concentrated and pressed into the weave.
Anything that has been stored: linens out of a cupboard, coats out of a closet, bedding from a spare room. Add cloth nappies, dish cloths, and anything else that lives permanently damp.
Now the exclusions. Anything with dye that bleeds should never sit in water, because a long soak is the ideal condition for colour to transfer from one item to another.
Wool and silk stay out. Protein fibres and protease enzymes are a bad pairing, since the enzyme cannot tell the fabric apart from the soil on it.
Leather, anything with glued trim, and anything with a structured or interfaced panel such as a suit jacket. Water in a canvas front does damage a wash never would.
The Maple Heights part
The heating season here runs long, and it changes what comes back out of storage in spring. Forced air heat dries the house and keeps air moving through every closet and cupboard, which pulls a fine layer of household dust into anything stored, month after month. That dust settles onto the residue already in the fabric, and six months of it is what produces the stale laundry odors in a sweater that went into the box clean.
Basements make it worse. A stored box in a Maple Heights basement sits in air that is cooler and damper than the rest of the house, and damp is the difference between a stale smell and a musty one. Cardboard compounds it, since a box absorbs moisture from the room around it and then holds that moisture against whatever is inside.
This is the exact case where a soak beats a second wash. The smell is not sitting on the surface, it has been working into the fibre for months, and forty minutes of tumbling will not reach it. An hour in warm water with an enzyme detergent, followed by a normal wash, does more than three consecutive cycles ever will.
Ohio summers do the same thing at speed. Humid August air means a finished load left in the drum for an afternoon picks up a smell that took a stored blanket half a year to develop, and the answer is the same one. Soak it properly once rather than rewashing it three times and hoping.
Where a soak actually rinses out
A soak lifts residue off the fibre, and then something has to carry it away.
